Remember those goals you made a few months ago? Yes, I’m talking about your new year’s resolutions. Now that we are a few months into 2014, it’s a good time to think about the resolutions, how much progress you’ve made, and whether you’re on track to achieve them.
Unfortunately, at this time, many people will look back at their New Year’s resolutions and realize that they haven’t gotten very far. While one issue may be motivation, another more common problem is the goal itself. Many people set unrealistic goals that aren’t achievable, which means they are just setting themselves up for for failure. The goals with the highest success rates are those that challenge you but are still attainable at the same time.
When setting goals, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Be realistic
The number one reason why people fail at the their goals is because they aren’t realistic about it. It’s important to create stretch goals that are challenging but at the same time, there is a fine line between challenging and unattainable. If the chances of you succeeding at your goal are just short of a miracle, then you aren’t being realistic. Achievable goals are ones that are within your control.
2) Create checkpoints
Goals can seem big and audacious as a whole. That is why you should break them down into smaller goals. This helps you get a better sense of what you are trying to accomplish. Create checkpoints for yourself when you hit a certain milestone or a specific time period. This will help you achieve a little but a lot at the same time. It will also help your motivation overall knowing that you are making progress.
3) Make a plan
People often set goals and then hope that they happen without doing anything. Success doesn’t just show up at your doorstep. You have to work towards it. Instead of sitting around hoping to reach your goal, make a plan. How are you going to get started? When do you want to achieve your goal? Do you need to ask for help? Ask all these questions and create a realistic game plan for yourself
4) Tell someone about it
If you’re making a goal, don’t keep it to yourself. Tell someone about it. When you make your goal public, it makes it feel more real. The chances of you just forgetting about it are less likely since someone else may hold you accountable. You can also find a buddy to work on your goal with. If someone you know has a similar goal, work on it together. This will double your chances at success.
